MSU Email is an online messaging service provided by Michigan State University for both students and faculty. However, due to an agreement with Microsoft to provide a centrally supported email service hosted through Office 365, MSU is currently using two different email systems, therefore undergraduate students that set up their NetID on or after June 8, 2015 will be migrated to the new Office 365 at “spartanmail.msu.edu”. While all other students currently using the University’s primary webmail service will have to log in at “mail.msu.edu/imp/login.php”.
If you’re using the latter, which is the MSU’s primary email service, then don’t get too comfortable or used to it, because the University has plans to transition all undergraduate students, even those who set up their MSU NetID prior to June 8, during the fall 2015 semester. The main reason why Michigan State University wants to transition everyone to the new email system is because Office 365 offers a lot of powerful features such as calendaring, storage, online collaboration, instant messaging, and video chat services. Other benefits include the ability to seamlessly access services on desktop, laptop, and mobile devices, an improved web interface, and up to 25mb attachment size. Another important reason is that the current email system at “mail.msu.edu” has reached its full capacity.
Since a lot of students don’t know which system they’re currently on, the best solution is to go to MSU’s email locator page and try to sign in from there, after entering their NetID on that page they will be automatically directed to the appropriate email system. New undergraduate students will be taken to the Office 365 interface, while all other students will be sent off to MSU’s primary webmail login page.
